Lesson Title and Description
Garden Greetings! This lesson provides students with the opportunity to develop their observational skills while orienting them to the school garden and teaching them how to safely use garden tools and plant seedlings. |
Alignment with California State Standards
Next Generation Science Standard: K-ESS3 Earth and Human Activity: Communicate solutions that will reduce the impact of humans on the land, water, air, and or other living things in the local environment. |
Lesson Title and Description
It's Autumn! Students prepare two varieties of winter squash and describe each squash’s color, shape, taste, and texture. They will count and compare the number of seeds found. Student will help prepare squash for tasting, create seed packets to save seeds, and share a story about the cycle of seeds. |
Alignment with California State Standards
Common Core Standards for Mathematics: K.CC.B.4 Count to tell the number of objects: Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities. Connect counting to cardinality K.CC.C.6 Compare numbers: Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group, e.g., by using matching and counting strategies. Next Generation Science Standard: K-ESS2-2 Earth’s Systems: Construct an argument supported by evidence for how plants and animals (including humans) can change the environment to meet their needs. |
Lesson Title and Description
Going on a Leaf Hunt Students are introduced to surface area as a method of measuring and practice this concept by measuring the area of a leaf with a nonstandard unit (dried lima beans). Students will go on a leaf hunt and share storybooks about leaves and their characteristics. |
Alignment with California State Standards
Common Core Content Standards for Mathematics: K.MD 1 Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length or weight. Describe several measureable attributes of a single object. K.MD 2 Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see which object has “more of”/“less of” the attribute, and describe the difference. K.CC.G.4 Analyze and compare two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes, in different sizes and orientations, using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, parts and other attributes. K.CC.G.5 Model shapes in the world by building shapes from components and drawing shapes. |
Lesson Title and Description
Incredible Edibles Students learn about the importance of plants to our survival and how to identify the six parts of a plant. Students learn that the fruits and vegetables we eat are all parts of a plant through a game, song, stories, garden exploration, and snacking. |
Alignment with California State Standards
Next Generation Science Standard: K-LS1-1 Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals (including humans) need to survive. |
Lesson Title and Description
Soil Exploration Students use tools to explore the properties of various soils and share their discoveries of living and nonliving matter as they dig in garden soil. |
Alignment with California State Standards
Next Generation Science Standard: K-LS1-1 Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals (including humans) need to survive. |
Lesson Title and Description
Garden of Senses Students increase awareness of their environment by looking plants and natural objects of a particular color, texture and scent. As a result of this structured observation, an appreciation of our natural surroundings is developed. |
