After School/Summer and In-School Instructor
Reports to: Program Manager
Hours: Part time; 8 week after school (1.75 hours for 8 sessions), 1
week summer program (5 hours per day over five days), and
possible one hour in-school lessons (up to 30) during the school
day during the 2023-24 academic year.
Location: Souza Community Garden, Santa Clara; possibly other schools in Mountain View or Santa Clara.
Dates of Employment: Wednesdays from 2:45- 4:30 p.m.,September 13- November
(8 weeks) and week of June 3rd, from approx. 8 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Other dates during school-day by prior arrangement and
availability.
About this position:
Instructor leads Living Classroom (LC) environmental literacy lessons to school-aged children at
Souza Community Garden in Santa Clara and schools that have subscribed to the LC program.
The instructor engages the students’ curiosity and sense of fun, while providing environmental
education that meets California’s Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science
Standards for in-school lessons. Educational activities at the Souza Community Garden do not
have to meet the State Standards.
Although the full scope of the school-day lessons is still in the planning stages, the plan will be
finalized by the end of September. School-day lessons would include elementary grade specific
lessons at one or more locations within the Mountain View Whisman School District, St. Simon
School in Los Altos, and Oster School in San Jose.
This position is perfect for someone that is looking for short-term instructional experiences in the
outdoors, connecting kids to nature and growing, harvesting, and eating fresh produce, and that
has available time during the after-school and summer program dates as well as possible
availability during the school day for instruction, for several partial days per month. Thorough
training on lessons and activities will be provided.
Responsibilities:
Responsibilities and tasks may vary and change throughout the year; however, key work tasks
will include, but not be limited to:
● After training, lead instruction of Living Classroom lessons and activities. Lessons will
be in person and another adult will be present, including the classroom teacher for
in-school lessons. Lessons at Souza Community Garden will be accompanied by an
assistant as well.
● Pick up and return lesson materials from Mountain View main office to the Souza
Garden and school sites.
Qualifications
● Previous experience working with classroom groups of elementary-aged children is
highly desirable.
● A genuine enjoyment of working with children and helping them learn through play.
● Experience with environmental science and/or gardening (especially edible gardens) is
valuable, but not required.
● Energy and enthusiasm—plus a keen sense of hands-on fun!
● Ability to “think on your feet,” as some lessons may take unexpected detours.
● Ability to get—and keep—young children on topic.
● Punctuality is a must; flexibility is a great asset.
● Valid CA Drivers license and a cell phone.
