Powerful Plants
Students are introduced to the concept of photosynthesis by planting seedlings, snacking on edible plant parts, and measuring the growth of their plants several weeks later.

1-LS1-1  ​Use materials to design a solution to a human problem by mimicking how plants and/or animals use their external parts to help them survive, grow, and meet their needs.

Animal Homes
Students examine the structure and function of various animal homes and conduct an outdoor search for animal homes around the garden and school grounds.

The Best Nest
Students survey a variety of different nests and work to build bird nests from natural materials found around the school campus.  ​

Garden Tea
Students gather herbs from the school garden and make delicious tea. Students will learn about tea traditions around the world and how light passes through transparent, translucent, and opaque liquids. ​

1-PS4-3  ​Plan and conduct an investigation to determine the effect of placing objects made with different materials in the path of a beam of light.

Growing Vegetable Soup
Students review the six structure of plants, the process of photosynthesis, and harvest vegetables from the school garden to make vegetable soup. ​

Light and Shadows
Students will learn how the sun moves across the sky through activities and a garden/plant investigation. ​
